<title>Beyond the Shelves: An In-Depth Exploration into the Preservation, Conservation, and Security of School Library Information Resources in Nigeria</title>

<description>Beyond the Shelves: An In-Depth Exploration into the Preservation, Conservation, and Security of School Library Information Resources in Nigeria
Aliyu, Abubakar Sanni; Izah, Maimuna
This paper investigated the preservation, conservation, and security of school library information resources in FCT, North-Central, Nigeria. The study employed qualitative research design. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting eight (8) public and private school libraries for the study, and the instruments used to collect data were face-to-face interview and observation. The data collected were analysed using descriptive method. The findings of the study revealed that there is significant variations of information resources among libraries, with common resources available across libraries including; textbooks, novels, and magazines, while electronic books (E-books), journals, and specific multimedia materials are less prevalent in most of the school libraries surveyed. Preservation practices demonstrate discrepancies, with notable efforts in most school libraries while conservation measures lack digitisation efforts across all libraries. Security protocols vary across all the libraries. The study also revealed the predominant challenges such as book mutilation, theft, inadequate funding, lack of equipment/facilities, absence of preservation and conservation policies, lack of security personnel, lack of trained library personnel, lack of awareness and poor maintenance culture. The paper recommended that the school administrators needs to allocate adequate resources or seek external funding, provide staff training, enhance preservation and conservation efforts and reinforce security measures in school libraries. Implementing these recommendations can contribute to more effective information resource management in school libraries. Future research should explore digitization strategies and undertake longitudinal studies to assess the sustained impact of interventions.

<title>Information Needs and Information Seeking Behaviour of the Postgraduate Students at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abuja</title>

<description>Information Needs and Information Seeking Behaviour of the Postgraduate Students at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abuja
Chinako, Asogwa; Daniel, Titilayo
The study investigated the information needs, and the information-seeking behaviour of NILDS postgraduate students, the sources consulted, barriers, as well as ways to improve their information-seeking experiences. The study adopted a descriptive survey method. The target population was all the postgraduate students of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and a random sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents. The study opted for the use of questionnaires and data was analysed using frequency tables and percentages. The major findings of the study are: that postgraduate students’ information needs vary but the highest information need is for academic purposes. The students use sources such as textbooks, journals, Internet, and rely heavily on human resources for information. The studies also found that the students encounter a lot of challenges in meeting their information need but ranking highest is the lack of space in the library and not understanding the library’s shelf arrangement/classification scheme. On the strategies to enhance their information seeking experience, the students said there is the need to increase the copies of important books, need for library orientation for fresh students, and increase borrowers’ privileges among others.

<title>Effective Library Services to the Legislature: the Need for a Consortium among Legislative Libraries in Abuja</title>
<link>https://ir.nilds.gov.ng//handle/123456789/881</link>
<description>Effective Library Services to the Legislature: the Need for a Consortium among Legislative Libraries in Abuja
Asogwa, Chinako; Mmomelu, Leticia; Daniel, Titilayo
The ever growing rate of information and publication has made it impossible for any library, however big, to acquire all the information resources needed by the users. Ownership of collection development is gradually being replaced by the need for access to information and knowledge without regard to location and format. Resource sharing among libraries has become the way out of library lack and a way to fulfil users’ satisfaction. The arrival of information and communication technologies (ICT) has increased both the convenience and efficiency of finding and producing information resources. This equips libraries with the facilities and the ease to share their information resources to a greater extent. This paper discusses the concept of resource sharing, the need for resource sharing, and methods that can be adopted for effective service delivery to library users. The article discusses how legislative libraries in Abuja can form a consortium to improve access to more collections and be able to fulfil users’ information needs. It goes further to make recommendations for procedures to be adopted for a successful consortium and consequent resource sharing programme among legislative libraries in Abuja
