| dc.description.abstract | On May 28, 2025, a 19-year-old Nigerian, Destiny (surname withheld), was reportedly beaten to death by fellow Nigerians in Ghana’s Volta Region over a financial dispute. Destiny had travelled from Edo State to Ghana in pursuit of educational and artistic opportunities but fell victim to exploitation and fatal assault under suspicious circumstances. This tragic incident indicates the growing risks faced by Nigerian youths abroad, particularly those migrating through informal channels. It also reveals a possible systemic weakness in Nigeria’s consular response, diaspora protection frameworks, and public awareness of safe migration.
To address these concerns, the National Assembly may wish to:
● Requesting a formal briefing from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigerian High Commission in Ghana on the steps taken regarding Destiny’s death;
● Inviting testimonies from the victim’s family, diaspora organisations, NiDCOM, and civil society to inform legislative recommendations;
● Review and strengthen the NiDCOM Act to grant it greater authority in protecting Nigerians abroad and intervening in diplomatic crises;
● Engage Ghanaian authorities and parliament to ensure thorough investigation, protection of Nigerians, and swift justice;
● Mandate awareness campaigns through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Orientation Agency to educate young Nigerians on migration risks and available consular protections.
Destiny’s death is a sobering reminder of the urgent need for proactive legislative and diplomatic safeguards for Nigerians abroad. Through oversight, reform, and international cooperation, the National Assembly can affirm Nigeria’s duty to protect its citizens at home and across borders. | en_US |
