dc.description.abstract | According to reports, over 1,000 Nigerian citizens are currently stranded in conflict zones across Israel and Iran due to escalating hostilities, including missile strikes and infrastructure disruption. Many are taking refuge in underground shelters in cities such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Reports of the closure of the Nigerian Embassy in Tel Aviv and the absence of active diplomatic support have heightened fears and desperation among the affected population. Despite proactive evacuations by several foreign governments, Nigeria is yet to repatriate any citizens, pending diplomatic and logistical arrangements. The delay in evacuation and lack of embassy presence have placed Nigerian nationals at considerable risk, undermining their welfare, safety, and fundamental rights. The National Assembly may wish to intervene by:
● Convening a joint hearing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency to assess the status of embassy actions and evacuation plans;
● Facilitate parliamentary diplomatic engagements with neighboring countries to secure safe evacuation corridors and flight access;
● Legislate emergency funding for evacuation logistics, temporary housing, medical care, and psychological support for evacuees;
● Establish communication platforms through NiDCOM to track, update, and assist stranded Nigerians;
● Work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Support reintegration efforts for returnees through job assistance, education reinsertion, and financial aid.
This humanitarian and diplomatic crisis demands swift legislative oversight. The National Assembly may kindly act swiftly to uphold Nigeria’s constitutional responsibility to protect its citizens abroad and demonstrate leadership in times of international emergency. | en_US |
