Urgent Legislative Intervention to Address Escalating Insecurity in Kaiama LGA, Kwara State
Working Paper
Kaiama Local Government Area (LGA) in Kwara State is facing a worsening security crisis due to the resurgence of terrorist activities, particularly from a group known as the Mahmuda group. Despite previous Senate directives in 2022 for military intervention, recent reports indicate the withdrawal of military forces from the region, leaving residents vulnerable and dependent on poorly equipped local vigilantes. The resulting insecurity has led to mass displacement, increased kidnappings, and a growing erosion of public trust in the government’s capacity to protect its citizens. The absence of sustained military presence has allowed terrorist elements to entrench themselves further, posing a significant threat to the lives, properties, and economic stability of Kaiama and its environs. Legislative intervention is urgently required. The National Assembly should summon the Minister of Defence to account for the troop withdrawal, mandate the immediate redeployment of military forces, investigate the stalled establishment of military infrastructure in the region, and commission a comprehensive security assessment. Through swift legislative action, Nigeria can reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding citizens, restoring public confidence, and stabilizing the region.
